British Shorthair
Origins:The history of the Brisish Shorthair can be traced back to Roman Times. they were probably originally kept not as domestic pets, or as God symbols (as with the Egyptians. They were working cats and kept as "mousers". also unlike thier long haired cousins these work tools did not need grooming. When exibiting began in the second half of the 19th century these native cats were first in line. In 1889, when the first comprehensive book on cats was published, the British Shorthair was considered the most important. Right from the early days the most highly prized was the blue (and today to an extent.) leading to some breeders thinking of it as the epitome of the breed.
The breeding of this breed suffered during the second world war to the point where in post-war britain there were few studs males left. Many tried to save the breed by mating the queen to a stud of foriegn body type. fortunately this trend was reversed in the fifties leading to the British Shorthair we know and love today.
Appearence:The first thing that hits you about this breed is the size. They are large powefful cats. this is emphasized by their soft, thick luxurient fur. Most striking perhaps is their large round heads - and especially the big round eyes. Like their ears they are set well apart. They have short strong legs and again rounded bodies.
Personality:Owners will tell you they are a delight to own. Intelligent, affectionate and untemperamental. A quiet modest cat who would rather be sitting by the fire snoozing than curiously investigating the new cardboard box in the kitchen. they have a soft voice. Even if they have a large territory to command they are unlikely to venture far from home.
Origins:The British Shorthair likes his food. If close tabs arent kept on what he eats (especially after being neutered.)he could soon start looking decidedly rounded if not tubby in all areas.
