Cirrhosis Of The Liver

Postby LadyBird » Thu Jul 23, 2009 9:48 pm

Hi,I have just found out yesterday that my 8 year old male cat Hank, has chronic cirrhosis of the liver.

His prognosis is not very good. We are devastated. Hank has been quite poorly for some time, but recently had begun to pick up, so we thought he was over whatever it was he had. He had been to the vet several times over the last few months but the symptoms were not consistent with a liver dysfunction.

We cannot believe this is happening, we have just got Minnie back to health after her horrific attackby a dog and now this. Minnie and Hank are brother and sister, we have had them since they were tiny kittens, they are now 8 years old.

We are nursing Hank at home now ,he has to have a drip twice a day, and he cannot have any medication until he starts to eat, which he won’t do. We have cooked him fresh chicken breast, fresh fish, but he won’t look at it. His condition is chronic and the vet has told us not to be optimistic as 9 out of 10 cats with this illness do not make it.

We preformed a miracle with Minnie,so we now need another miracle for Hank. :(

Hi val,

This has been such a hard time for your two cats. 8 years old. You must feel very close to Hank. You must feel so powerless. But actually I think if anyone has a chance, Hank does. Simply because he has your family to care for him. I guess the vet is right, in that you must expect the worst possibility, but you will know if he doesnt make it, that you couldnt have given him more.

Our thoughts are with you

Are there others here with felines that have cirrhosis of the liver? Is this a fairly common condition for them to have?
Cirrhosis of the liver can occur in felines.

Yes I believe it can be quite common in older cats.

My boy is actually doing really well. He is off his medication and at this moment is enjoying a normal life. :D
